Kramp-Karrenbauer to succeed Merkel as CDU leader

Germany's Christian Democratic Union General Secretary Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer was elected as the new party leader on Friday, succeeding Angela Merkel after 18 years of leadership.

The new party leader beat millionaire businessman Friedrich Merz, critic of Angela Merkel. Kramp-Karrenbauer, also known as AKK, is often referred to as "Mini Merkel" and is a loyal follower of the current German chancellor.

Previously, Merkel announced she would not be running for reelection in the party, nor in the national election. During her farewell speech, she received a 10-minute-long, cheering "Danke Angie."
