Kremlin: Russia sees Trump as partner

Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov stated on Friday that Moscow sees United States President Donald Trump as a "negotiating partner" rather than a rival. He added that Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin will hold a joint press conference following their meeting in Helsinki on Monday. Ushakov stressed that the summit will mainly focus on bilateral relations between the two countries and the situation in Syria.

The official added Trump and Putin are also set to talk about US' withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal, the denuclearization of North Korea, as well as economic cooperation between Russia and the US. He noted that the two leaders could also agree on future meetings which may take place in Moscow and Washington. On the other hand, Ushakov blasted the US for its "unconstructive" opposition to the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline and claimed such a position stands against international trade foundations.

Earlier, Trump said he believes the US and its allies can have a good relationship with Russia and expressed hope the two sides will discuss the issue of nuclear proliferation, which is currently the "biggest problem in the world."
