Lam: Beijing law won't affect HK's independence

Hong Kong's Chief Executive Carrie Lam said on Friday that the national security law announced by the government in Beijing would not affect the city's judicial independence.

"The decision and the enactment of the national law will be able to establish and improve the legal framework and enforcement mechanisms for the [Hong Kong Special Administrative Region] to safeguard national security," she said. "They will not affect the legitimate rights and freedoms enjoyed by Hong Kong residents under the law, or the independent judicial power, including that of final adjudication, exercised by the judiciary in Hong Kong," according to Lam.

The proposed national security law was met with sharp criticism from Western countries, including the United States, who believe it would infringe upon Hong Kong's autonomy. Reacting to the plans, US President Donald Trump warned that Washington would respond "very strongly."
