Lavrov hails Trump's proposal to end Korea drills

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov welcomed on Wednesday United States President Donald Trump's proposal to end the "war games" on the Korean Peninsula, saying it would solve many issues in the longstanding North Korean crisis. "President Trump's announcement about the lack of need to hold yet another US-South Korean drills will contribute to ensuring a right pace [in the Korean settlement]," Lavrov stated at a press conference.

Russia's top diplomat added that the process of fully denuclearizing the Korean Peninsula would take a long time, and expressed hope that the US and North Korea will have "enough patience" to extend their cooperation beyond yesterday's summit in Singapore between their leaders Donald Trump and Kim Jong-un. Additionally, Lavrov pointed out that the issue of North Korea can "hardly be resolved" in a bilateral format. "All participants of the six-party talks persistently noted that the process should result into creating a system of peace, security, and stability throughout Northeast Asia," he said.
