LDP to pick Abe's successor in mid-September

The ruling Japanese LDP is looking into holding its leadership election on September 15 after Prime Minister Shinzo Abe announced his resignation, Kyodo reported on Friday.

One of the LDP's most prominent figures, Shigeru Ishiba, who lost to Abe in the leadership race in 2012 has expressed interest in running for the position. Meanwhile, Deputy Prime Minister Taro Aso stated that he was not interested in becoming the head of government.

Earlier, Abe, who resigned due citing health issues, stated he will stay on as prime minister until a replacement is found.
