Lighthizer: NAFTA deal is not near

United States Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer said that he doesn't believe a deal on the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) will be reached anytime soon with Mexico and Canada.

"There are gaping differences on intellectual property, agricultural market access, de minimis levels, energy, labor, rules of origin, geographical indications and much more," he said in a statement.

The three countries are negotiating a revision of the 24-old trade agreement that abolished trade and investment barriers. Earlier in the day, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said that "a good NAFTA deal is on the table," while Mexico’s economy minister, Ildefonso Guajardo, stated it would be possible to reach a deal by the end of May.
