Lockheed to build Air Force GPS satellites worth $7.2B

The United States Air Force said it selected Lockheed Martin to build 22 GPS III Follow-On satellites worth up to $7.2 billion. The first GPS IIIF satellite is expected to be available for launch in 2026, the Air Force said.

“The world is dependent on GPS, from getting directions to getting cash from an ATM or trading on the stock exchange,” Secretary of the Air Force Heather Wilson said. “These satellites will provide greater accuracy, and improved anti-jamming capabilities, making them more resilient,” she added.

Chief of Staff of the Air Force Gen. David L. Goldfein said that “this investment in GPS III continues to advance our capabilities into the future.” Lockheed took over GPS deal from Boeing years ago and the first 10 GPS III satellites are expected to be fired into orbit by 2023.
