Lufthansa's 2021 net loss shrinks to €2.19 billion

Lufthansa reported on Thursday an annual revenue increase of 24% in 2021 to €16.81 billion, with operating expenses remaining virtually unchanged at €20.77 billion. The airliner's net loss declined by 67% to €2.19 billion, with a loss per share of €2.99. The number of flights rose by 18% to just over 460,000, while the total number of passengers soared 29% to nearly 47 million.

"In the first quarter of the year, the spread of the Omicron variant and the resulting rise in coronavirus cases will continue to adversely affect us. However, for the rest of the year, we expect a significant relaxation in the pandemic situation allowing many people to catch up on holidays and business travel. At the same time, the political and economic consequences of the Ukraine conflict could affect our business performance in ways that cannot yet be estimated," Lufthansa noted.
