Lukashenko: Poland-Belarus crisis may end this year

Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko said on Tuesday that it is possible the migrant crisis at the country's border with Poland will end by the end of the year.

In an interview with RIA Novosti, Lukashenko said he assured outgoing German Chancellor Angela Merkel that he will "try to solve this problem before the New Year because we do not need it." He noted Minsk will ask migrants who are in the country legally to "go back because we have no humanitarian corridor."

Earlier, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the bloc is ready to mobilize up to €3.5 million to support voluntary returns of migrants from Belarus.
