Lukashenko wins over 80% of vote in Belarus election
Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko (pictured) secured 80.23% of the vote in the country's presidential election, the Central Election Commission's (CEC) preliminary results showed on Monday.
Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, a spouse of arrested activist Sergey Tikhanovsky and the leading opponent to Lukashenko, secured a 9.90% support. The turnout in the 2020 Belarus presidential elections was 84.23%, the CEC said.
On Sunday evening, the police used tear gas to disperse protests in Belarus as rioters hit the streets after first polls showed Lukashenko won nearly 80% of the vote. Tikhanovskaya rejected the preliminary results that saw her scoring around 7% in the presidential election.
