Macron: Attack on Syria not declaration of war

French President Emmanuel Macron said that air strikes in Syria were not a declaration of war against the Syrian regime but a necessity and added that he had convinced United States President Donald Trump into staying in Syria "long term."

"We have not declared war on the regime of Bashar al-Assad," Macron said in an interview with BFM television. He insisted that the strikes targeting Syrian alleged chemical weapons facilities were legitimate and that it was necessary to send a signal that the use of chemical weapons against civilians would not go unpunished.

Macron also claimed credit for convincing Trump to stay engaged in the conflict long term. "Ten days ago, President Trump was saying the United States of America had a duty to disengage from Syria," he said. "I assure you, we have convinced him that it is necessary to stay for the long-term."
