Macron calls for more control over entries to EU

French President Emmanuel Macron urged on Thursday the European Union to become more "vigilant" about allowing entry to its territory from third countries amid fears of new spikes in infections from COVID-19.

"For me, one of the issues of discussion is to be really taking coordinated decisions in terms of opening of borders to third countries and on recognizing vaccines, because, at this stage, we have to limit this to the vaccines that have been approved by the European medical authority," Macron said.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel previously called on the bloc to impose mandatory quarantine for travelers from the United Kingdom. Earlier, Macron stated the members of the EU should coordinate the reopening of their borders.
