Macron establishing French space force

During a speech on Saturday before Bastille Day, French President Emmanuel Macron told military personnel that he gave the green light for the creation of a space command. The system will operate within the country's air force and help upgrade defense structures, he stressed.

The head of state highlighted the importance of protecting national satellites and revealed the budget is still under consideration. The space command is scheduled to become operational in September. Macron added it will be known as Space and Air Force. Minister of the Armed Forces Florence Parly placed focus last year on strategic space autonomy for France amid the arms race in the sector.

The government plans to spend €3.6 billion from 2019 to 2025 on military satellites.
