Macron: France not looking to block Huawei

France is not looking to ban Huawei, French President Emmanuel Macron said on Thursday after Washington blacklisted the Chinese tech giant.

"Our perspective is not to block Huawei or any company, it is to preserve our national security and European sovereignty. But I think launching now a technological war or a trade war is not appropriate," he told the audience at the VivaTechnology conference, which kicked off in Paris earlier in the day. "We have some restrictions but (are) totally focused on what is related to this national security, nothing more," he added.

The US Commerce Department said earlier there is reason to believe that "Huawei is engaged in activities that are contrary to US national security." US intelligence agencies previously accused Huawei of spying on behalf of the Chinese government.
