Macron, Merkel warn Turkish offensive in Syria must end

French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Angela Merkel stated on Sunday they told the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to halt the military operation in northern Syria.

"We have a common desire that this offensive ends. This offensive risks creating an unsustainable humanitarian situation and to help Islamic State re-emerge in the region," Macron said.

The Turkish military incursion has been facing mounting pressure, with Germany announcing it will stop issuing new arms export permits to Turkey and United States President Donald Trump asserting he may implement sanctions against Ankara. Meanwhile, Syrian state media announced Damascus has sent its troops to face the Turkish forces after reaching a deal with the Kurds.
