Major Chinese cities quarantined over coronavirus

The rapid-spreading coronavirus has forced Chinese authorities on Friday to continue the lockdown of a number of cities. Public transport in Wuhan, Huanggang, Jingzhou, Xianning and Chibi, cities with a combined population of 30 million, has been suspended. A section of the Great Wall is also set to close down in an attempt to prevent the spread of the virus. Shanghai Disney Resort has announced it would close starting Saturday. Meanwhile, in the city of Wuhan, where the virus originated, authorities are busy building makeshift hospitals to treat those affected.

Chinese state television reported on Friday that the viral outbreak has killed 25 people up to now with 830 more suffering virus-related health issues in mainland China. This is in additon to over 800 reported cases worldwide.

Despite the quick spread of the virus, the World Health Organization (WHO) on Thursday refused to declare a global health emergency. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told reporters after an emergency meeting of the organization: "Make no mistake, this is an emergency in China. But it has not yet become a global health emergency. It may yet become one."
