Makhlouf calls for at least 50 bps hike in December

European Central Bank (ECB) Governing Council member Gabriel Makhlouf (pictured left) stated Monday in a lecture in Dublin that he sees an increase of 50 basis points in interest rates "as the minimum needed" at the December meeting.

The Irish central bank chief also said one should be open to policy rates moving into tightening territory for 2023. "It is premature to be talking about the end-point for policy rates amid the prevailing levels of uncertainty," he added.

On the other hand, he also mentioned that quantitative tightening raises "complex issues" and, therefore, must be applied with caution and care.
