Manchin, Sanders had intense exchange Wed. - report

United States Senators Joe Manchin and Bernie Sanders had an intense discussion about the total worth of the congressional Democrats' budget reconciliation bill on Wednesday, Axios reported on Thursday, citing several other senators who witnessed the exchange.

According to sources, Manchin even formed a zero with his fingers to underline that he is "comfortable with nothing," referring to the worth of the social spending package as Sanders made a multi-trillion dollar proposal. By making the gesture, Manchin reportedly showed how much say he has over the matter, especially considering the Democrats' thinnest possible Senate majority and the fact they need votes from all 50 members of their caucus to pass the bill.

Despite expressing some optimism earlier in the day on Thursday, Manchin later told reporters that an intraparty agreement on the legislation "is not gonna happen anytime soon."
