Mattis urges military dialogue with China

United States Secretary of Defense James Mattis said on Friday that the US and China should improve their joint military dialogue, reminding that "competition does not mean hostility" and that it does not have to "lead to conflict." Speaking at a joint press conference with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and after a meeting with Chinese officials Yang Jiechi and Wei Fenghe in Washington, Mattis reminded that it is key to recognize common interests although Washington and Beijing do not always agree.

Secretary Mattis pointed out that US-China military ties can "serve as a source for stability" if the two countries are "sincere with one another." He also said that Washington and Beijing will continue to seek ways to implement joint security frameworks and measures, suc as the joint staff dialogue mechanism.

Pompeo said at the press conference that the US is not pursuing a Cold War with China. He reminded that cooperation is essential despite the differences between Washington and Beijing. President Donald Trump "made clear the US seeks a constructive relationship grounded in fairness, reciprocity and respect" with Beijing, Pompeo added.
