May: UK will leave EU customs union

The United Kingdom will be leaving the European Union Customs Union, British Prime Minister reiterated on Thursday as she arrived for the Western Balkans summit in Sofia, denying reports she was preparing for the country to remain in the union after 2021.

"The UK will be leaving the customs union, we are leaving the EU. Of course we will be negotiating future customs arrangements with the EU," she explained, adding that the government has set three objectives - establishing an independent trade policy for Britain, a frictionless border to ensure free trade and to avoid a hard border between Northern Ireland and Ireland.

Earlier, The Telegraph reported that due to a deadlock between ministers disagreeing on the future deal with the bloc, London is willing to remain in the customs union with Brussels even after 2021, when the Brexit deal expires.
