Merkel: AstraZeneca shot to be used for people over 65 in Germany

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Wednesday that the coronavirus vaccine co-developed by AstraZeneca plc and the Oxford University will be used for people older than 65, reversing the government's previous recommendation.

Speaking at a press conference following a meeting with regional leaders, she stressed that the inoculation offers a path to beat the pandemic, adding that the vaccination will be conducted in several shifts. The interval between doses "should be used to the maximum" so more people would get inoculated faster, Merkel underlined. The chancellor also announced that vaccine "deliveries to general practitioners should be established by the beginning of April."

Merkel also revealed that one free test per week will be available to all Germans from March 8 and that the government will provide rapid antigen tests for workers. The government's "next steps must be clever and bring us forward, not backward," she noted.
