Merkel: EU-US trade deal of existential importance

Germany's Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Tuesday that the European Union must resolve ongoing trade issues with the United States as soon as possible.

Speaking at the Day of German Industry (TDI 2019), Merkel criticized France for opposing the initiation of trade negotiations between the EU and the US, claiming a trade agreement between the two sides is of "existential importance."

In April, the EU approved the initiation of trade talks with the US after EU member states voted overwhelmingly in favor of the proposal, with France being the only country to vote against it. However, EU Trade Commissioner Cecilia Malmstrom stated it is now up to the US to decide when the talks will begin and expressed worries Washington is not ready to discuss tariff cuts yet.
