Merkel, local govts agree on partial lockdown

German Chancellor Angela Merkel and the heads of local governments agreed on Wednesday to introduce a partial lockdown that would start on November 2 and last for one month to prevent further spread of coronavirus.

The measures will include closing bars, restaurants, cinemas, theaters, and various leisure facilities. The shops will be allowed to remain open, but only if workers and customers respect the social distancing of at least one person per one square meter.

Earlier in the day, Germany reported 14,964 new cases of coronavirus, the highest daily rise in infections from COVID-19 since the beginning of the pandemic.
