Merkel worried about Delta variant

German Chancellor Angela Merkel expressed concerns over the coronavirus pandemic on Thursday, particularly due to the emergence of new strains like the Delta variant.

Speaking during one of her final appearances in the German parliament, Merkel warned that Germany and the rest of Europe remain on "thin ice" despite progress being made in COVID-19 vaccinations across the continent.

"We need to remain vigilant. In particular, the newly arising variants, especially now the Delta variant, are a warning for us to continue to be careful," according to the outgoing chancellor.
