Met Police starts criminal probe into Darroch leak

London's Metropolitan Police started a criminal investigation into leaks of official diplomatic communication from former United Kingdom Ambassador to the United States Sir Kim Darroch.

Assistant Commissioner Neil Basu said: "Given the widely reported consequences of that leak I am satisfied that there has been damage caused to UK international relations, and there would be clear public interest in bringing the person or people responsible to justice." Basu also called on those who leaked the emails from Darroch to step forward as well as anyone who may have information on the leaks. He went on to advise media not to publish such content in the future, but instead reach out to the authorities instead.

The traditionally good relations between the US and UK encountered some trouble after Darroch decided to resign following criticism from US President Donald Trump after the leaked documents showed that Darroch called Trump "incompetent" in diplomatic cables.
