Meta facing consumer complaint in EU

The European Consumer Organisation (BEUC) announced on Thursday it filed a complaint against Meta Platforms Inc. over the information the company required its users to share in order to pay for the advertisement-free variants of Facebook and Instagram.

"Many consumers likely think that, by opting for the paid subscription as it is presented, they get a privacy-friendly option involving less tracking and profiling. In fact, users are likely to continue to have their personal data collected and used, but for purposes other than ads," the BEUC said in a statement. "Meta provides misleading and incomplete information to consumers which does not allow them to make an informed choice."

The complaint has been filed in Austria in the name of several consumer groups from all over the European Union.
