Meta takes down Chinese, Russian networks for violating policy

Meta Platforms announced on Tuesday it took down two unconnected networks from China and Russia that violated its policy against coordinated inauthentic behavior.

The tech giant said the "large" Russian network focused on promoting pro-Russian content related to the war in Ukraine, primarily targeting Germany, but also France, Italy, Ukraine and the United Kingdom. "The operation began in May of this year and centered around a sprawling network of over 60 websites carefully impersonating legitimate websites of news organizations in Europe, including Spiegel, The Guardian and Bild. There, they would post original articles that criticized Ukraine and Ukrainian refugees, supported Russia and argued that Western sanctions on Russia would backfire," Meta noted.

Meanwhile, the Chinese network was described as "small" and targeted "people on both sides of the political spectrum" ahead of the midterms in the United States and spread anti-government sentiment in Czechia over Prague's support of Ukraine.
