Microsoft moving its AI staff from China to Canada

Microsoft is relocating some of its top artificial intelligence researchers from China to Canada, according to a report published by the Financial Times on Friday.

Microsoft Research Asia (MSRA), based in Beijing, has started the process of obtaining visas to relocate up to 40 top AI specialists from China's capital to its institute in Vancouver, according to sources cited by the paper.

Meanwhile, Experts familiar with the so-called "Vancouver Plan" described the move as a reaction to the escalating political tensions between the United States and China. They view it as a defensive move to prevent top talent from being recruited by Chinese tech groups eager for AI researchers who could develop a domestic version of OpenAI's ChatGPT.
