Microsoft pres. calls for facial recognition regulation

Microsoft president Brad Smith said that government regulations on facial recognition technology are necessary. “Facial recognition will require the public and private sectors alike to step up – and to act,” he said in a blog post. Smith added that the creation of a “bipartisan and expert commission” that will draft policy recommendations is needed.

His comments came in a time when employees of several major tech companies called on their leadership to get out of the deals with government agencies that use the technology that faces little legal oversight. Last month, Microsoft employees called CEO Satya Nadella cancel the contract with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for services including facial recognition technology, the Hill reported. Smith, however, said that the contract with ICE does not involve providing facial recognition services.
