Mississippi gov signs bill to change state flag

Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves signed a bill to retire the Confederate battle standard from the state's flag, following the state Senate voting in favour of the emblem's removal.

"This is not a political moment to me but a solemn occasion to lead our Mississippi family to come together, to be reconciled, and to move on," the Republican governor said.

The move comes amid unrest in the country that ensued after protests over the death of George Floyd engulfed the nation, which prompted many to demand the Confederate-era symbols be taken down.
