Mnuchin denies wanting to loosen Iran sanctions

United States Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said on Thursday that it is "misinformation" that he is in favor of easing sanctions against Iran, thus denying earlier media reports he supports a softer stance in order to ensure a meeting between President Donald Trump and his Iranian counterpart Hassan Rouhani.

Mnuchin also noted that France understands that giving Tehran a $15 billion credit line would be a violation of the US embargo and Paris would need an approval from the US to strike such a deal with Iran.

Earlier, the US treasury secretary noted Washington plans to continue its "maximum pressure campaign" on Iran. Meanwhile, media reported that Trump "showed openness" to considering the French proposal if Iran starts complying with the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), also known as the Iran nuclear deal. Last week, Iran further suspended its JCPOA commitments and slammed France for seeking America's permission to grant Iran the credit arrangement, which would be guaranteed by the country's oil revenues.
