Mnuchin says no invitation yet from China for talks

More work is needed for the so-called "phase one" trade deal before United States President Donald Trump and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping sign it "next month," Steve Mnuchin said. The secretary of the Treasury revealed there was no invitation yet from Beijing for the continuation of talks but that he and US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer would go there if needed.

The round of import tariffs for Chinese merchandise scheduled for December remains part of the discussion, he stressed. Mnuchin praised the provisions tentatively agreed for the segment of the protection of intellectual property, calling them "quite broad." He acknowledged some of the technology transfer policy may be covered in the "phase two."

Turning to the global initiative to tackle digital tax issues, the Treasury secretary claimed the US is "getting closer" to an arrangement in discussions with France and the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development.
