Nasdaq jumps at open as Microsoft hits $1T market cap

Wall Street started trading mixed on Thursday after 3M, UPS, Altria and Comcast posted their earnings before the bell, but Nasdaq jumped as all eyes were on Microsoft which, in Wednesday's afterhours trading, became the third company ever to reach the $1 trillion market cap in the United States. Before the bell, the US Census Bureau said US durable goods orders increased in March and the US Department of Labor reported that initial jobless claims in America rose by 37,000 in the week ending April 20.

Meanwhile, former Vice President Joe Biden officially announced his 2020 presidential bid and President Donald Trump warned him the race may get "nasty."

The Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.68% at the start of the day as 3M fell 10.31% at 9:32 am ET after the company announced it would cut 2,000 jobs.

The Nasdaq 100 rose 0.82% at 9:30 am ET as Facebook surged 8.38% at 9:32 am ET and Microsoft jumped 4.73% at 9:33 am ET.

The S&P 500 was flat, increasing 0.03% at 9:30 am ET.

The euro was 0.09% lower against the dollar and changed hands for 1.11453 at 9:43 am CET.
