NATO holds emergency meeting on Trump threats

NATO leaders interrupted their regular schedule on Thursday to hold an emergency meeting. Earlier, conflicting reports emerged in the media that United States President Donald Trump threatened to leave the alliance if its members do not increase their defense spending. Some outlets suggested the US president demanded a shorter deadline for defense budget increases.

On Wednesday, the first day of the NATO summit in Brussels, it was reported Trump asked the organization to raise its defense spending target from 2% to 4% of GDP. NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, however, affirmed that 8 members committed to spending 2% of their GDP on defense this year, while the majority agreed to reach the 2% target by 2024.
