NATO hopes to avoid arms race - Stoltenberg

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization will "continue to strive to a meaningful balance," Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg (pictured) said on Wednesday, stating the alliance's focus in the coming six months will be to engage in dialogue with Russia and have it return into compliance of the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF).

Speaking to defense ministers of the member states in Brussels, Stoltenberg said NATO does not intend to provoke an arms race with Moscow and has no intention of deploying any new nuclear arms systems in Europe.

Previously, Russia announced it will stop its participation in the INF treaty after the United States' decision to withdraw from the agreement. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov stated Moscow will "mirror" all the actions made by the US in relation to the INF.
