NATO: US-led strikes clear signal to Assad

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg told Turkish NTV channel on Monday that the United States-led airstrikes against Syria represented a "clear signal" to the government of Bashar al-Assad and the countries that back the Syrian president.

"This operation was aimed at reducing the ability of Damascus to use chemical weapons, the United Nations' investigation of the chemical weapons use was impeded by Russia. This is a clear signal to the Assad regime, Russia and Iran," Stoltenberg claimed. The NATO chief also praised Turkey for its "support" during this weekend's operation.

Over the weekend, the United States, France and the United Kingdom carried out airstrikes in response to the Syrian government's alleged use of chemical weapons in Douma. Earlier, UK Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson insisted the attack was not conducted with the aim to depose Assad.
