New bill could hurt Google ad business - senator

The Competition and Transparency in Digital Advertising Act presented by a bipartisan group of United States senators could jeopardize Google LLC's digital advertising business and force it to sell some parts of it, Utah Senator Mike Lee told the Wall Street Journal on Thursday. According to him, Google LLC is both "a seller and a buyer" of advertisements, giving the business a significant edge in a market where it may engage in activity that damages "everyone."

If the legislation is passed, Google will be unable to remain in all areas of business and similar companies will have a year to comply with the new law, according to the newspaper.

The bill aims to address the lawsuit made by more than a dozen state attorneys that claimed that Google deceived publishers and advertisers for years about its ad auction pricing and processes, the WSJ reported.
