New home sales in US up 11.9% in December

Sales of new single‐family houses stood at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 811,000 in December 2021, the United States Census Bureau and the Department of Housing and Urban Development revealed in a report released on Wednesday. The latest reading represents an 11.9% increase compared to the revised figure from the previous month and a 14% fall from December 2020.

In December 2021, the median sales price of new houses sold amounted to $377,700, while the average sales price was $457,300. The seasonally-adjusted estimate of new houses for sale at the end of December came in at 403,000, translating to a six-month supply at the current rate of sales.

When it comes to full-year 2021 figures, the report said that 762,000 new homes were sold over the course of the year, meaning that new home sales declined 7.3% from 2020.
