New Scottish referendum possibly this year - official

Leader of the Scottish National Party (SNP) in the British House of Commons, Ian Blackford (pictured), said on Friday the second independence referendum in the United Kingdom's northern territory could happen this year.

"I want to see that referendum happen as quickly as is practically possible, I think it's in everybody's interest that that is the case," Blackford told PA Media. He added Prime Minister Boris Johnson could not "stand in the face of democracy" and stop the referendum from happening if the SNP won the majority in the Scottish general elections in May.

Johnson previously criticized "the very same people who [...] go on and on" about a new Scottish independence referendum to stop talking "endlessly" about it at the moment the people of both the United Kingdom and Scotland "want in particular [...] to fight this [coronavirus] pandemic."
