Tieto invests EUR 10 million in its data centre in Espoo

Tieto is investing EUR 10 million in its data centre in Espoo, which is one of the most energy efficient data centres in the world. Tieto is expanding the data centre and doubling its capacity, making it possible to shut down two data centres which are becoming outdated. By expanding capacity at its greenest data centre, Tieto's data centre services will become more environmentally friendly.
"We will continue to invest in sustainable technology. Demand for cloud services continues to grow and, as we have launched a new Tieto Cloud Server, we will need more space in our data centres. Our goal is to replace inefficient technology with an energy-efficient IT capacity service. Investing in the new data centre also ensures the quality of our capacity services," says Mikko Pulkkinen, Vice President, Tieto Managed Services.
Tieto is implementing its strategy by investing in data centre capacity and green technology. Tieto and Fortum are working together at the data centre in Espoo. Currently, the centre produces 30 GW of heat, which is equivalent to the annual heat requirement of about 1 500 houses but, through new investments, the amount will increase significantly. The heat from the data centre will be distributed to homes in Espoo via Fortum's district heating network, replacing some fossil-fuel based heat production.
The Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) of Tieto's data centre in Espoo is 1.2 - 1.3; typically, data centres range from 1.8 to 3.0.
