Press release - Grontmij to reduce train travel time for the Danes

De Bilt, 23 April 2013 - The Danish government wants to bring down the travel time by train to one hour per stretch on the Copenhagen-Odense, Odense-Aarhus and Aarhus-Aalborg rail sections. Grontmij has been assigned by Rail Net Denmark to reduce the travel time between Copenhagen and Odense. The project fee amounts to € 1.1 million.

Says Søren Larsen, country managing director of Grontmij Denmark, 'Our task now is to explore ways to enable trains to run up to 200 kilometres an hour on the line. This means we have to identify those sections where speed can be safely increased to win those last minutes. It's a great challenge in an area where Grontmij already has real expertise.' Finding those minutes could involve straightening stretches of track to cut out 'time-consuming' curves. Then there are the bridges and overhead contact lines - they may have to be heightened or even moved. A key part of Grontmij's job is to find the best, most environmentally friendly solutions for this great challenge.

A recognised expert in rail, Grontmij is currently working on a number of major projects around Europe, including Denmark where a team is also investigating how speed on the stretch of line between Køge and Næstved can be increased from the current 120 to 160 kilometres. This line is also being electrified as part of efforts to shorten travel times and reduce pollution from rail traffic. The Danish team is also behind the development of the Carlsberg S-station in Copenhagen. A Dutch team is working on the design of a 2.3-kilometre tunnel that will run under the historic city of Delft in the Netherlands and will double the number of tracks to improve transport efficiency. Grontmij was also instrumental in the new rail link between Warsaw's city centre and the Chopin International Airport where also a significant reduction of travel time was realised - the new line opened on budget and in time for the Euro 2012 football event last year.
