Italian wages edge up just 0.1% in April

The wages per employee remained virtually the same in April compared to previous month. Hourly index per employee inched up 0.1%. Compared with April 2015, wages increased by 0.6%, according to the latest data provided by the National Institute of Statistics (Istat) on Thursday. Back in March, for comparison, contractual hourly wages were unchanged over February and increased by 0.8% year over year.

The figures relate to contractual wages and salaries according to collective labour agreements. The coverage rate – i.e. share of national collective agreements in force for the wage setting aspects – was 35.9% in terms of employees and 34.6% in terms of the total amount of wages.

Earlier, Istat reported that retail trade in the country was 2.2% higher year on year in the quarter ending on March 31.
