The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in April 2016 stood at the seasonally adjusted rate of 23.3%, compared to 25.3% in April 2015. The downward revised number for March 2016 was 23.7%, according to data from the Hellenic Statistical Authority (Elstat) published on Thursday.

Monthly change in employment was 0.7% with 25,600 newly employed in April.

Even the number of inactive persons – those that neither worked neither looked for a job – decreased by a 1.7% from April 2015, and by 0.2% from March, said Elstat.

The latest official data does not correspond with the scenes on the streets of Athens, where austerity and unemployment protests were held on Monday (pictured) outside labour ministry.

In Athens, the Athex Composite index edged up 0.08% to 530 points at 12:24 p.m. CET. Halkor, Revoil and Papoutsanis gained the most, while Selected Text Industries, Frigoglass and Terna Energy were in decline. Banks, including Piraeus, National Bank, Alpha, Marfin and Attica recovered or stayed flat.
