Turkey to extend detention without charges

President Reçep Tayyip Erdoğan signed a decree to declare state of emergency in the Turkish Republic. The decree also gives legal ground to extend period of detention to 30 days for those suspected for plotting a military coup, without official charge. The statement also orders closure of more than 1,000 private schools and some 1,200 associations.

The measures are a part of a wider retaliation for failed coup d'état on July 15, which dissolved within 12 hours, without receiving support among citizens or foreign governments. The government, led by president Erdoğan, has taken on suspected coup plotters, arresting thousands of soldiers, officers, judges, and other government-related employees. Erdoğan has accused Muslim cleric Fethullah Gülen for being mastermind behind attempted coup. Gülen denied involvement and accused Erdoğan of plotting himself a faux coup d'état to purge state's institutions from perceived enemies.
