Europe closes with gains on earnings data

European stocks finished slightly higher on Thursday, as investors analyzed the minutes from the United States Federal Reserve's July meeting and pored over another batch of earnings data.

The Italian FTSE MIB led the way with a 0.88% increase, as its top performer, Italian broadcaster Mediaset rose 4.94% on talks of a possible deal with Vivendi.

The pan-European Stoxx 600 rose 0.70%, driven by Vestas Wind, which jumped 9.87% after the renewable energy firm announced better-than-expected second-quarter results and upgraded its 2016 outlook. Thomas Cook travel group, another big market mover, surged 7.13% after signing a supply agreement with Webjet.

In Germany, the DAX index increased 0.62%, led by a 3.71% jump in Deutsche Börse's stock.

French CAC 40 was up 0.44%.

FTSE 100 inched up 0.14%, helped by gains in commodities sector, as London-listed stocks Glencore, Antofagasta and BHP Billiton all finished up by more than 2%.
