Europe opens higher, mining sector and gold up

Markets in Europe opened higher on Tuesday after several companies reported their earnings. Precious metals prices increased after gold and silver suffered losses in yesterday's trade.

The FTSE 100 gained 0.32% at 9:00 a.m. CET. The mining sector pushed the index up, as Anglo American and Antofagasta jumped 3.14% and 2.48%, respectively, at 9:08 a.m. CET. Rio Tinto, Glencore, Polymetal International, BHP Billiton, Fresnillo and Randgold also increased significantly.

The DAX was up 0.30% at 9:03 a.m. CET. The best performer was Deutsche Telekom, as its shares rose 2.21% at 9:04 a.m. CET.

The CAC 40 edged up 0.19% at 9:03 a.m. CET. Orange led the gains, rising 2.48% at 9:01 a.m. CET. Earlier today, the telecommunications company reported a 0.4% increase in sales and 1.6% rise in earnings which were €3.6 billion in the third quarter.

Gold increased 0.20% to go for $1,267.17 per ounce, while silver grew 0.32% to sell for $17.66 per ounce at 9:02 a.m. CET.
