S. Korea's parliament impeaches Park

The South Korean parliament voted on Friday to impeach the country's President Park Geun-hye over her alleged involvement in a corruption scandal and violation of the constitution, Yonhap reported. The impeachment motion was filed last week by three opposition parties and today 234 out of 300 members of parliament voted in favor of the proposed impeachment.

Park's impeachment will be reviewed by the Constitutional Court within the next six months. In the meantime, Prime Minister Hwang Kyo-ahn will take over as the country's acting president.

If the court approves the impeachment passed in parliament, a presidential election, which was originally scheduled for December 2017, will have to take place at an earlier date.
