Wall Street ends slightly higher, Dow fails to hit 20k

The markets in the United States closed with small gains on Friday ahead of the Christmas holiday. 

The Dow Jones rose 0.07% as the index remained near the 20,000-point mark, but was still not able to hit the psychologically significant level. The largest gains were recorded by healthcare and cosmetics companies.

The Nasdaq 100 ended trade 0.11% higher. Vertex Pharmaceuticals led the gains as its shares climbed 3.18%.

The S&P 500 increased 0.13%. The best performer was energy firm Williams Companies.

The dollar index edged down 0.04% to 103.04 at 10:04 p.m. CET. The pound was down 0.10% against the U.S. currency to go for 1.2274 and the euro gained 0.14% compared to the greenback at 9:59 p.m. CET.
