Trump signs Dakota, Keystone pipeline executive orders

United States President Donald Trump has signed executive orders on Tuesday to advance the construction of the Keystone XL and Dakota Access oil pipelines, two projects that were strongly disputed and delayed by the Obama administration, due in part to environmental concerns.

The president also said that if the pipelines are built in the US, they should use American steel, making a move that many analysts consider will bring a boom to the US oil industry and create jobs in the related sectors.

The construction of the proposed Keystone XL pipeline, which would run from Canada to US refineries in the Gulf Coast, was blocked in late 2015 on global climate change worries. Separately, last year, the Army Corps of Engineers refused to allow construction of the Dakota Access pipeline under Lake Oahe on safety concerns. That pipeline would carry North Dakota oil through South Dakota and Iowa to a shipping point in Illinois.
