Intesa: Bid for Generali only 'case study'

Italian Intesa Sanpaolo SpA said the speculation in the media about its attempts to take over Assicurazioni Generali SpA surfaced from a mere "case study, which is part of... various analyses." In a statement released on Friday, the lender reiterated "possible industrial combinations" with the Trieste-based insurer "continue" to be considered as an option for growth.

Yesterday the bank denied it is set to launch a takeover bid. On January 24 Intesa issued a statement that it is interested in expansion in asset management, private banking and insurance.

Generali edged 0.26% to the red, trading for €14.9 per share at 9:27 am, while Intesa added 1.19%, with shares changing hands for €2.206.
